Guide to Hosting the Perfect Party

Each year the holidays are a time to connect with family and friends. I am delighted to share a few of my most treasured guidelines to host a spectacular celebration.

Welcome the unexpected.

Today’s crises are tomorrow’s fireside anecdotes. No detail gone awry has more value than the moments you and your guests are sharing.  Laugh together at the mishaps that are sure to arise and raise your glass to the memories!

Think abstract.

When considering the theme for your evening, allow your mind to push its creative limits. Rather than thinking in terms of traditional themes, think about what textures, scents, and sounds you envision. Then, plan your theme from the feeling that evokes. Rustic wood, candle wax, melted butter, and crisp foggy air could be Farmhouse Holiday in Bordeaux accompanied by soft French music, crisp bread, Tête de Moine cheese, and a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon by the crackling fire.

Add a dash of awe.

Consider unique ways to surprise and delight your guests: a musician to play during dinner, face painters, a blind tasting, stargazing or after-dinner fox-trot lessons. There are endless ways to add whimsy and joy to your celebration!

Go big.

When a Magnum is opened, the room becomes still and heavy with anticipation, similar to the first carve of the turkey on Thanksgiving Evening. Hint: If the bottle is dipped in wax, briefly hold a flame to the top of the wax to pull the cork out with ease.

As the Estate Sommelier, I am always available to assist you with wine pairing and service recommendations. Please send me a note at [email protected] if I can help in any way.

Happy Celebrating! I hope to welcome you to a gathering here on DAOU Mountain soon!

Cheers,
